Governors

Welcome to Baston CE School and to the Governors’ section of the School’s website. As a Church of England school, everything we do is grounded in our Christian values. We believe that the caring and nurturing environment at Baston School encourages the development of an all-round individual, with each child being encouraged to realise their full potential.

Our vision, as a team, is to challenge and support our church school to provide inspirational education to empower everyone to dream, thrive and achieve.

As a governing body we take the safeguarding of all our pupils and staff very seriously and, as such, all of our governors have undergone an enhanced DBS check.

We also encompass our responsibilities with regard to community cohesion by working as a cluster with seven local schools to maximise the benefits of shared resources and expertise.

Below you can see who our governors are, and what roles they fulfil.

Following recent legislation, all governing bodies of maintained schools constituted prior to September 2012 had to be reconstituted under the School Governance (Constitution) (England) Regulations 2012 or the School Governance (Federations) (England) Regulations 2012 as appropriate. Government policy is that governing bodies should be no bigger than necessary to secure the range of skills they need.

What is different? Governing bodies are no longer based on the stakeholder group principle where the different categories of governor had to be in proportion to the size of the governing body. Governors should now be appointed or elected on the basis that they have "the skills and experience required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school".

Baston CE Governing Body reconstituted in September 2015. We undertook a skills audit to identify the skills held by governing body members to ensure a good breadth and depth of skills and identify any areas where skills were lacking. Future appointments will be made to fill any gaps in our skills set. We repeat the skills audit each September to ensure that our skills are used effectively.

Local Authority Governors

1

Local Authority Governors are nominated by the local authority but are appointed by the governing body. The local authority can nominate any eligible person as a local authority governor, but it is for the governing body to decide whether their nominee has the skills to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school and meets any other eligibility criteria they have set.

The local rector is an ex-officio member of the governing body. The other foundation governors are appointed by the diocese.  Their role is to try to ensure the continuation of the character and ethos of the school and they must have the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school.

Parent governors are elected by other parents at the school. Any parent, or carer, of a registered pupil at the school at the time of election is eligible to stand for election as parent governor

The governing body appoints co-opted governors. They are people who, in the opinion of the governing body, have the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school.

We look forward to meeting you at one of the numerous school events and wish your child every happiness and success at Baston School.

The Governing Body can be contacted by emailing via the school office at enquiries@baston.lincs.sch.uk and asking for it to be forwarded to the Chair of Governors, or by leaving a letter with the school office staff, addressed to the Chair of the Governing Body and marked Private and Confidential.

MEET OUR GOVERNORS

Mrs Rebecca Mills (Headteacher),  I have been headteacher at Baston CE Primary School since September 2013. I am a member of all governing body committees and together we share a very strong vision for our school and our pupils.  I am passionate about the personal development and academic progress of every child in our school and I truly value the time I spend working within our Governing Body to ensure that our school achieves its very best.

Mrs Jean Cross (Foundation Governor), Chair of Governors. I have been a member of the Governing Body at Baston CE Primary School since December 2009 and was elected as Chair of Governors in July 2013.  I have been involved in education all my working life and have specific expertise in Special Educational Needs. As Chair, I have the overall responsibility of leading the governing body to ensure that it fulfils all of the statutory responsibilities and that all our children are educated to achieve their potential within a safe, happy environment.  Together with the Headteacher, staff and the Governing Body, we ensure that Christian values remain at the heart of the school.

Mr Simon Gledhill (LEA Governor), Vice-Chair of Governors; Chair of Pupil Support, Community and Leadership Committee. I was appointed to the Governing Body in June 2012 and was elected Vice-Chair of the Governing Body in July 2015. I am a Foster Carer and also an Independent Member of Fostering and Adoption Panels. Currently, I am studying towards a degree in Social Work whilst also volunteering in Kings Gate Community Church's office during the week. I have specialist knowledge of Safeguarding.

Mrs Kerry Bedford (Co-opted Governor),  I have been on the Governing Body since November 2008. Initially, I was a parent governor but was elected as a co-opted governor in July 2014.  I have two boys who both attended Baston School; they are now both in secondary education. I am an accountant and bring my financial expertise to the finance committee.

Mrs Emily Walker (Parent Governor), Vice-Chair of Education, Achievement and Quality of Teaching Committee.  I was elected as a governor in March 2012. My current role as an Assistant Head Teacher at a local school, and my prior experience in a range of educational settings, provides me with the skills and knowledge to support and challenge the school on matters relating to education.  In addition, I have a vested interest in the school as my younger child current attends.  This supports me in my understanding of where parental concerns may arise.

Mrs Katie Nicol (Co-opted Governor). Vice-Chair of the Finance Committee. I was appointed to the Governing Body in February 2012.  I'm a Construction Project Manager in my day job and use the problem solving and management skills from that position to bring to my role as a governor at Baston. I enjoy being able to support our school, staff and our children.  I live in Baston and my two eldest sons attend the school.

Mrs Sarah Dickson (Staff Governor) was appointed in July 2016.  I am currently Deputy Head, Year 6 Class Teacher and SENDCo. As part of the Education Committee I offer an insight into the teaching aspects for the whole school and the planning, monitoring and assessment process that we undertake in order to provide pupils full access to the National Curriculum. As SENDCo I work closely with the governor responsible for SEND and provide updates of all SEND pupils, training and meetings held with pupils and parents. I ensure personalised learning is available for all children at Baston CE Primary School in order for everyone to 'dream, thrive and achieve'.

Mrs Rhiannon Pinder (Co-opted Governor), Chair of Education, Achievement and Quality of Teaching Committee. I was appointed to the Governing Body in December 2014. My work experience includes many years as a Business Analyst and a year as a secondary Mathematics teacher. I have two children currently in a local secondary school. I am interested in education matters and the changes in government policies and, for that reason, wanted to be involved, as a governor, with a local school.

Rev Neil Knox (Foundation Governor) - resigned July 2017.

Rev Carolyn Bailey (Foundation Governor) - newly appointed in July 2017. I am new to the area after taking up the post of Rector of the Ness Group, under the Archdeacon of Boston in July. I love spending time with young people and am looking forward to all that being involved with the school as a governor will mean.

Mr Scott Rendle (Co-Opted Governor), Chair of the Finance Committee. I was appointed to the Governing Body in April 2016. I am a retired headteacher from a large primary school in Cambridgeshire. The school I ran was financially autonomous, so I bring relevant financial knowledge as well as management skills. Prior to teaching, I worked for nearly two decades as a marine engineer.

Mrs Patricia Barnett (Parent Governor), Vice Chair of Pupil Support, Community and Leadership Committee. I was elected in October 2015.  I am director of my own certified positive performance training and coaching company. In being part of the governing body, my skills provide the support for the school and its values with my commitment to education for all. I have a daughter who attends the school.

Dr Simon Pitchford (Foundation Governor) My family have recently settled in Baston and our two sons attend Baston CE Primary School. I was appointed as a Foundation Governor in July 2017 as a link with the village church. My day job is as a Lecturer in Pharmacology with an active research group at King's Colllege London, where I see education from an end perspective. I am interested in the promotion of STEM subjects in education.

Johann Boorman, Clerk to the Governors. I work as Clerk to Governors, through Peterborough City Council’s Clerking Service.
