Our learning 2016-2017

 Term 6 in North America Class

ENGLISH and TOPIC
We have been very busy this term learning all about Greek Democracy and comparing it to our modern day politics. We explored the differences in Ancient Greek times and decided that we prefer how politics is today because it is more equal. So we could experience it for ourselves we held a vote where we all wrote our own Manifesto for the 'North America Party' and presented our policies to the class. We carried out a vote writing down the name of the candidate we wanted to vote for. It was very close with only one vote in it! Afterwards we discussed how we felt about the process.

MATHS
This term we have been going over various different areas of maths as a recap of our learning. We started by exploring fractions and consolidating our learning, we then moved onto the bus stop method for division and we have more recently been going back over time. We will now be focusing on problem solving for the next few weeks and embedding the method of RUCSAC.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
We are continuing to develop our deeper thinking skills through this new key question.......

What is the best way for a Jew to show commitment to God?

SCIENCE/FOREST SCHOOL
This term we have carried out learning about the Greeks in Forest School. We have also explored our most recent science topic comparing vertebrates and invertebrates.

 Term 5 in North America Class

ENGLISH and TOPIC

This term in English we are exploring the Ancient Greeks. We will be writing our own Myths and Legends as well as developing our guided reading skills through Pandora's box, Greek God stories and Aesop's Fables. During our topic lessons we will be learning about Greek democracy, Greek philosophy and Greek Gods and Goddesses. 

We have been busy writing our own Myths this week in class, we have explored the different stages to build a myth including character, setting, a problem, journey and a solution and used this knowledge to create our own amazing myths!

Over the past week we have been creating descriptive poems with a focus on adverbs, adjectives and powerful verbs. We explored language around Mount Olympus and used this to create our own book of poems. They really are fantastic!

 

MATHS

We have started this term by learning more about different units of measure. Our focus has been length, weight and capacity.

This week we have revisitied multiplication and division; we revised the formal writtten methods and have been problem solving using RUCSAC as a method to help us.

We have explored fractions further this term, thinking about adding and subracting fractions with the same denominator and finding fractions of shapes and numbers.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

We are continuing to develop our deeper thinking skills through this new key question.......

How important is it for Jewish people to do what God asks them to do?

This term we have been learning about some of the rules of Judaism with a focus on how we would feel if particular foods were forbidden. We have learnt about what Kosher food is and why it is important to Jews as well as the significance of Passover.

SCIENCE

This term we are learning about Electricity.... we have been busy exploring and creating working circuits!

FOREST SCHOOL

This term we have been thinking about the Ancient Greeks in Forest School. So far we have learnt about Ancient Greek masks and the importance of them, we created our own out of paper plates and materials from the forest. We have also been building our own Greek temples!!

Term 4 in North America Class

ENGLISH and TOPIC

This term in English we are continuing with our Romans topic and will be exploring Boudicca in more detail. We will be learning all about her life and how she became to be head of the Iceni tribe. We have started with creating Wanted posters for Boudicca on tea stained paper and we will be writing diary entries of her last day alive next and then exploring instructions. 

  

 

MATHS

We have started this term by going over our money skills! We will now be focusing mainly on multiplication and division. We will be improving our mental maths skills as well as learning new formal written methods for multiplication and division. We will also be re-visiting time!

  

 

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

We are really loving RE this year! We love having an enquiry question to explore and it helps us to improve our discussion skills. 

We are continuing to develop our deeper thinking skills through this new key question.......

Is forgiveness always possible?

 Term 3 in North America Class

ENGLISH and TOPIC

This term in English we are learning about Julius Caesar; we will be starting the term delving into the world of William Shakespeare and exploring play scripts. We are converting the narrative of the story Julius Caesar into a play script and performing it!

Recently we have turned into Journalists we have explored a variety of different newspaper articles and highlighted the features, we have also learnt about the importance of a headline and the difference between fact and opinion. We put all our new knowledge together to create a newspaper report about the death of Julius Caesar! 

  

 

MATHS

We have begun this term by exploring geometry; we have compared and classified shapes, identified lines of symmetry and translated shapes on a grid. We carried out a fantastic investgation using our data collection skills; some of Julius Ceasar belongings had been borrowed from a museum but had been taken from our classroom by a member of staff.....we had to use clues to collect, interpret and represent data to find two suspects!

More recently we have been exploring fractions!! we have looked at equivalent fractions and learnt all about decimals! We have found this tricky but we have embraced the challenge and produced excellent results. We can now discuss and find equivalent fractions and decimals.

HOW SPECIAL IS THE RELATIONSHIP JEWS HAVE WITH GOD?

So far this term we have explored 'Who is God?' we had some fantastic discussion about how our own interpretations of God can be and are very different and then explored how different artists portrayed God in their own artwork. We have gone on to learn more about the Jewish faith and their interpreations of God. 

 

SCIENCE

This term we are learning about State of Matter....we have already defined and demonstrated the differences between a solid, liquid and gas and how the particle formation is different for each. We have learnt about the water cycle and the different stages it goes through. Next we will be investigating Gas and learning more about evaporation. 

 

FOREST SCHOOL

This term in forest school we are exploring the Romans!! We have started by learning about Hadrians Wall and we all built a section of it on the school field. Next we made aqueducts.

 TERM 2 in North America class

 

ENGLISH and TOPIC

This term in English we are learning about character and dialogue, we will be exploring tribes in the rainforest and creating our own character to be part of a tribe! Watch this space to see how we get on!!

We have been learning about the 4 keys to character in class and have been using these to explore character in detail. We began by reading a variety of different character descriptions and highlighting the 4 keys to character, we then studied the character of the 'Bogwoppit'. We are currently exploring deep in  the book 'The Vanishing Rainforest', we have developed our understanding of character through extending our vocabulary choices, character pyramids and hot seating. From this we have been able to write some fantastic character descriptions creating our own characters to join the tribe!

In guided reading we have been doing a book study on THE JUNGLE BOOK, recently we explored the wolf pack in detail, we discussed their feelings and emotions towards Mowgli. We created freeze frames of the part in the story where the wolf pack are deciding if Mowgli can stay and be part of the pack.....

 

MATHS

We have started this term with a focus on multiplication, we have been learning our 6 and 7 times tables. We are getting very good at these and now need to focus on learning the division facts as well!!

We have learnt about finding the area and perimeter of different shapes and the strategies used to do this we have also continued to develop our skills in coverting measures. 

More recently we have been focusing on formal methods of calculation; we have focused on addition and subtraction completing 4 digit calculations and developing our mastery level thinking.

WHAT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE NATIVITY STORY FOR CHRISTIANS TODAY?

So far this term we have reminded ourselves of the Nativity story and completed a stick it together of what we think our the most significant parts and symbols in the Nativity story. This has prompted lots of discussion in our class as we had a variety of answers such as the donkey, the star and even the straw! 

 

SCIENCE

We started the term by investigating our digestive system, we learnt about the different parts of the system and the process each element goes through, we really enjoyed learning lots of new scienfic words and even produced some great mychoice homework to show this!!

Recently we have been learning about our teeth. We have explored the different types of teeth we have and the jobs each type of tooth has. We carried out a fantastic experiment using eggs, vinegar, coke and water whilst studying the effects of tooth decay!

FOREST SCHOOL

This term in forest school we are exploring sound, we have started with learning about pitch and volumn and using various materials in the forest to demonstrate this. 


 

FRENCH

We are learning all about animals!

 

 

 TERM 1 in North America class 

ENGLISH and TOPIC

So far in English this term we have been learning about different animals in the rainforest and creating non-chronological reports to show our findings. We have also been exploring poetry learning about structure, rhyme and performance skills; we have written our own poems about animals in the rainforest and performed a talk for writing poetry piece. 

We are now moving onto persuasive letter writing about if we think animals should be kept in the zoo or the wild and the impact of deforestation! 

We have been learning about deforestation and it's impact on the world! We used a stickit together discussion sheet to come up with a definition for deforestation and explained why it is important to prevent it. 

MATHS

Maths this term has had a focus on number and place value; we have learnt about rounding numbers to the nearest 10,100 and 1000, negative numbers, place value of numbers with 4 or more digits and roman numerals. As always we are continuing to learn our times tables, this term we are focusing on 6,7 and 9s!

We are currently developing our skills of telling the time and are learning to convert analogue and digital time.

This week we are using our skills in time to solve problems involving converting from hours to minutes, minutes to seconds, years to months and weeks to days. We have been using the RUCSAC method to help us!

DO PEOPLE NEED TO GO TO A PLACE OF WORSHIP TO SHOW
THEY ARE RELIGIOUS?

The children have really embraced this way of thinking and are continuing to explore the many ideas and elements around this question.
