Year 3 have begun an exciting new History topic this term: Would you prefer to have lived in the Stone Age, Bronze Age or Iron Age? Our first lesson explored the question, “How long ago did prehistoric man live?”

To help us understand just how long ago this was, we took our learning outside and created a giant timeline using two whole toilet rolls! Each sheet of toilet paper on the roll represented 1,000 years of history. The children had great fun running up and down our timeline, while beginning to appreciate the enormous amount of time between the Stone Age and the present day.

Through this activity, the children learnt that the prehistoric period began millions of years ago and that the Stone Age lasted for most of human history. We have also started to explore how historians divide time, including where BC and AD fit on a timeline.

It was fantastic to see the children so engaged as they physically experienced just how far back in time the Stone Age really was!
